The Acton-Boxborough Travel Basketball Program

Joseph C. McDonald, Jr., Co-President and Director of Boys Basketball
Joe McDonald is a founding director of the A-B Travel Basketball Program. He has coached his sons, Brett (recent UMass-Amherst graduate), Shane (sophomore at Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts in Orange, California), and Ryan (10th grader) throughout their travel team careers and has also been a strong advocate of the Community Education basketball program, where he has been a league director. As President and Director of Boys Basketball, Mr. McDonald serves as the top level point of contact for our boys program. He works to coordinate and refine our program philosophy and ensure that program goals are met and expectations are clearly defined each season. 2011 will be Mr. McDonald's 14th year of involvement in travel basketball.
Joe went to high school in New Jersey where he played basketball and baseball and then graduated from Boston College where he was a pitcher on the BC baseball team. He lives in Boxborough and works in higher education facilities management.
Joseph E. O'Brien, Co-President and Director of Girls Basketball
Joe O'Brien is a founding director of the A-B Travel Basketball Program. He has coached his son Joey (recent Villanova University graduate) and daughter Hayley (sophomore at Stonehill College) throughout their travel team experiences. Mr. O'Brien is one of the most successful coaches within the travel team program who has coached at both the boys and girls level. As President and Director of Girls Basketball, Mr. O'Brien administers the four girls teams, mentors the head coaches of those teams, and ensures that teaching goals and philosophies are followed. Mr. O'Brien will also often lend himself to help out at boys practices. 2011 will be Mr. O'Brien's 14th year of involvement in travel basketball.
Joe went to Danvers High School where he played basketball and football and then graduated from North Adams State College where he played basketball (in his words) for one very forgettable season. He still plays basketball every week. He lives in Boxborough and works in the pacemaker and deliberator division of Medtronics.
Paul A. Cartwright, Vice President and Associate Director of Basketball
Paul Cartwright is a founding director of the A-B Travel Basketball Program. He has coached his son Mike (recent UMass - Amherst graduate) and his daughter Erin (junior at UMass Amherst) throughout their travel team experiences. Mr. Cartwright is a certified high school basketball referee with a membership in IAABO (Board 27 - Boston) and is a long time Division 1 varsity level referee. He also serves as the referee scheduling supervisor for CMYBL, where he manages the officials for several hundred travel team games annually. As our Vice President and Associate Director of Basketball, Mr. Cartwright works as an overall general liaison to all teams. His wealth of experience in travel team basketball as a coach for both boys and girls, a referee, and an administrator make him a valuable addition. 2011 will be Mr. Cartwright's 16th year of involvement in travel basketball.
Paul went to Medford High School and then graduated from Northeastern University in Boston. He lives in Acton and works for the U. S. Postal Service in Concord.
Donald F. "Dee" Biggs, Vice President and Assistant Director of Boys Basketball
With his appointment just prior to the 2003 season, Dee Biggs is the most recent addition to the Board of Directors. As the Assistant Director of Boys Basketball, Mr. Biggs works with Mr. McDonald to administer and mentor the boys teams that make up two-thirds of our program. Now coaching at the younger levels, Mr. Biggs focuses on developing individual and team skills while trying to make the experience as fun as possible. He coached his son Casey (junior at The University of Rhode Island) for four years of travel team basketball and is about to begin his fifth season as a head coach in the fifth grade boys division. Mr. Biggs has also coached his older children, Brian and Jenna, in both basketball and baseball. 2011 will be Mr. Biggs' 13th year of involvement in travel basketball.
Mr. Biggs played basketball, football, and baseball while a high school student in Roanoke, Virginia, and ran track while in college at the Virginia Military Institute. He spent three years on active duty in the United States Army and was an infantry officer in Viet Nam. Dee lives in Acton and has worked for Welchs Juice for thirty two years where he is currently the director of demand fulfillment.
Joshua P. Hammer, Executive Director
Josh Hammer is a founding director of the A-B Travel Basketball Program. He began working in basketball while a high school student, when he was a referee for the Community Education basketball program as well as a weekend scoreboard operator for the then Community Education travel team program. He is a certified high school basketball referee with memberships in IAABO (Board 44 - Fitchburg), CBOA (California Basketball Officials Association - Orange County), and FHSAA (Central Florida Officials Association - Orlando) and has many seasons of experience officiating at the Division 1 varsity level . In addition to coordinating the administrative side of things, as executive director, Mr. Hammer acts as the overall general manager of the Acton-Boxborough program. Mr. Hammer was named the third commissioner of the Central Massachusetts Basketball League in 2002, the first such addition in almost a decade. He administers the large town division of the largest basketball league in Massachusetts.
Josh went to Acton-Boxborough and then graduated from Assumption College and The University of New Hampshire. At A-B, he played golf, tennis, and was an alpine skier. He is a commercial airline pilot for a major airline and is based at the New York/Newark Liberty International Airport.
